How to be a successful youth sports parent

May 26, 2010

Expert Tip

    1. Make sure your children know that--win or lose--you love them and are not disappointed with their performance.
    2. Be realistic about your child's physical ability.
    3. Help your child set realistic goals.
    4. Emphasize improved performance, not winning.
    5. Positively reinforce improved skills.
    6. Don't relive your own athletic past through your child.
    7. Provide a safe environment for training and competition. This includes proper training methods and use of equipment.
    8. Control your own emotions at games and events. Don't yell at other players, coaches, or officials.
    9. Be a cheerleader for your child and the other children on the team.
    10. Respect your child's coaches. Communicate openly with them. If you disagree with their approach, discuss it with them.
    11. Be a positive role model. Enjoy sports yourself. Set your own goals. Live a healthy lifestyle.

Latest news and information about the NFL.
  • Eli Manning and the Giants one-upped Tom Brady and the Patriots again, coming back with a last-minute score to beat New England 21-17 Sunday night for New York's fourth Super Bowl title. It was a rematch of the 2008 NFL championship, when Manning led New York past New England to ruin the Patriots' bid for a perfect season.

  • All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski is active for the Patriots for the Super Bowl, as is wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. Gronkowski has been recovering from a high left ankle sprain suffered in the AFC title game. He practiced on a limited basis this week. Receiver Ochocinco was inactive for the conference title game because of the death of his father a week earlier.
